| Hello everyone: Day one March 21 2010 You are probably wondering how you got here. My name is Al Salopek some of you know me as Bizaare Al from Bizaare Ave Cafe. Well I must still be Bizaare because I just started a non-profit org called Bee Understanding . Org; which I set up to bring awareness to the problems Bees are having in our over developed fast paced human environment. Please keep in mind this is day one and I am a foundation of 2 people it can only get better from here. I am a backyard Beekeeper with 14 hives and growing, I have saved hives from being destroyed in peoples yards and houses and have given them a place to call home in my backyard and friends yards. I have talked to children to help them understand why we need bees and have mentored people in how to keep bees in their backyard. I am not an expert but have had great success in my journey into keeping bees, and think I can help more by starting this. People don't realize that honey bees are losing places to call home because people, cities and states don't want bees near people because they might get stung so they kill them. If you eliminate bees from every yard, every park, near shopping centers, close to sidewalks, next to roads and everywhere in between you now have a problem. Bees account for 30 percent of the food we eat, the last I knew we need food to survive. Please google honey bees disappearing and read about CCD colony collapse disorder, its about habitat, pesticides, disease, and stress bees are under. Again this is day one and only the beginning and you can help even if you don't like bees because I know you like chocolate , almonds, melons, apples, blueberries and one out of every 3 bites of food you eat. You can help by: 1) telling someone about what I doing 2) putting a hive in your backyard or planting bee friendly plants 3) sponsoring a hive or donating equipment 4) posting here about whats going on in our environment 5) sending great links to me 6) or just pledge money ( being a newly formed 501c3 it will be a week or so before I can officially collect money but I will let you know) What I want to do to start is make information cards (non profit business cards) create a web-site print brochures and teaching materials buy equipment to help others get started in beekeeping build an observation hive ( a hive behind glass to use as a learning tool ) mentor others on how to keep bees teach classes purchase child size 'bee suits' (protective clothing) to encourge our future generation go to schools to inform children during science class and much more Can you help me? Comment by Gino Giglio on April 14, 2012 at 5:03am At our last beekeeper meeting on 6 April, that impressive video rig was owned and operated by GREG KNOP, a retired CBS cameraman living in Royal Palm Beach, who gave me his business card. I told him about our org needing a good DVD of our Al Salopek laying out the BASICS OF BEEKEEPING (see 21 March 12 below). Greg agreed to help. Now, for THE EVENT; beekeeper Susan Lerner told me she has some ideas in this regard --perhaps relating to the Rare Fruit Council International (RFCI), of which she is President.
Comment by Patricia Norris on April 13, 2012 at 4:59pm I can help as well. I have a professional quality video camera with tripod, etc if you ever would like to make a high quality video. I can also help with building hives, etc - whatever. I will introduce myself at the April 18th meeting and look forward to meeting you. Thanks for what you are doing. What a truly great service to the community.
Comment by Gino Giglio on March 21, 2012 at 1:31am I want to help you get a quality recording of the talk you gave tonight (20 Mar 12) at Mounts. Anybody who is curious about BEES would want to BUY A CD of you extraordinary fact-filled talk. The CD would enlighten many and make some money for the org to use to buy more hives, etc.
Al,
Please let me know when you need help, especially on weekends. I'm dollar poor, but am a good handyman, electrician, and carpenter.
